Smart networking in the “party season”

Dare I say it’s already that time of year, when there’s a great deal of entertaining, parties to attend, and people to meet. I once knew someone in Financial Services who had such an incredible way with people at social events that it felt like watching a master craftsman at work. He had an enthusiastic energy, was engaged and authentic, showed genuine interest in everyone he spoke to, and had an uncanny ability to strike exactly the right note in conversation. It’s no surprise that he went on to have a very successful career.

With that in mind, here are some ideas on how this season of parties and receptions can be a great opportunity to enhance your professional network.

A Great Opportunity

This time of year is ideal for reconnecting with people you haven’t seen for some time and catching up on their news. It’s a perfect moment to refresh and deepen your professional relationships.

Serendipity

At various events, you never know who you might find yourself sitting next to at dinner or being introduced to at a drinks reception. Perhaps you’ll meet a senior manager who is normally insulated by role and hierarchy—and suddenly they’re surprisingly accessible, even if only for a short while.

Calibrated Conversations

At these more relaxed, though still professional, events, it’s important to find the right balance in conversation topics—light enough for a social setting, yet relevant and appropriate to the environment. Showing genuine interest in the other person is always the best starting point. Keep in mind the central principle of networking: consider how you might add value to the other person. All of this, of course, requires reading the room and applying a light touch.

Follow Up Swiftly

After the event, it’s always worthwhile to follow up promptly. Write a note thanking the organiser. Reach out to people from your professional network whom you reconnected with. And if you met someone new you’d like to stay in contact with, the next day is the best time to send a message. A final note: take immediate action on any promises you made.
